Mixing A Metal Song From Start to Finish | Step 2: The Static Mix

In this series, you’re going to learn the process of mixing a metal song from start to finish. If you want to learn how to take a raw recording of a metal song to a loud, punchy, exciting mix, then you’re in the right place!

In Part 2, we’ll be focusing on “the static mix”. This part of the mixing process is done entirely without plugins. The aim here is to achieve a level and stereo balance across the whole mix. So everything can be heard as it should in relation to the other tracks.

Panning decisions will be made here as well, placing things where they should be in the stereo field.

This step is super important and can get you pretty much halfway through the mixing process in just 5 to 10 minutes. It’ll also help you to make mixing decisions going forward if you’re starting out with a great balance. Let’s start the static mix!
